How do I know which club is best for my son?
There is no easy answer here. The best recommendation is to speak with LD parents who are currently in travel, or have had older children in travel, and get their opinion. LDYL Coaches can also help. Coach Miller from the high school program is available to assist as well and can be reached at LDLaxCoach@gmail.com.
It is important to remember that not everyone has the same experience with teams. Most programs will have different coaches at each age level and many other variables. Look for key factors to your sons enjoyment of the sport such as: Who is coaching the team? How many practices and where are they located? Will he have friends on the team?
Attending tryouts is a great way to see how your child will fit with the team, culture, and coaching staff of a program.
When Are Tryouts?
Tryouts for the travel teams are typically a year beforehand. Meaning the Summer 2027 tryouts are held in Summer 2026, typically in July. Most teams will have supplemental tryouts throughout the fall, winter, and spring to fill positional needs.
Do We Need to Play Every Season Offered by the Club Team?
This varies by program but for most Summer is the main season. Clubs will offer practices/tournaments in the fall as well as winter sessions but those are often not required. We advise against programs that will require Spring participation during the LDYL season.
Club vs. Rec Lacrosse
Rec Lacrosse: Focuses on fundamental & skill development, specific amounts of playing time, community growth, and localized spring seasons with minimal costs/travel.
Club: Involves tryouts to form competitive travel teams. Programs often train and compete in the fall, winter (indoor), and summer. Playing time is not as equal as rec. Designed for competitive players looking to continue to develop their game.
Costs & Time Commitment
Financials: Club lacrosse can be costly, with yearly dues for Central PA clubs running anywhere from $500 to $3,000+. Additional expenses could include travel, hotels, and custom uniforms. Each club will differ in these areas and we recommend contacting them directly for pricing.
Time: Practices typically range from 2 to 4 times per week, with tournaments scheduled on weekends, mostly during the summer. Depending on age tournaments can be 2 to 5 times a summer for most clubs. Travel is typically within a 2-3 range of Central PA but will vary by club.
